Born in Tampico, Illinois, Ronald Reagan studied at Eureka College. He moved to Hollywood to begin a film career in 1937. He married actress Jane Wyman in 1940. Reagan joined the army in 1942 but was honorably discharged three years later because of poor eyesight. He then returned to Hollywood to pursue a movie career. He joined the board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild and served as its president from 1947 to 1960. He divorced Wyman in 1948 and married actress Nancy Davis in 1952. Although originally a Democrat, Reagan joined the Republican Party in 1962. As a Republican, he was elected governor of California in 1966. Reagan campaigned unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 and 1976. He won the presidency in 1980 and was re-elected in 1984. During his first term in office, he was wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt. He ordered an invasion of the Caribbean island of Grenada in 1983. Reagan held a series of four summit meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev between 1985 and 1988, which resulted in his signing the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). Reagan was in office during the Iran-Contra affair of 1986­87, but he was never proven to be involved. After leaving office, Reagan retired to private life.
